Happy 100th birthday Gladys!
Gladys Welch is a lively, bubbly resident at Red Roofs and she’s recently celebrated her 100th birthday at the home. An article featured in the Newark Advertiser has recently told a story about her life and we wanted to share those experiences with you.
Born in 1921 and originally from Collingham, Gladys lived in Bakers Mill – named after her mother’s family until she was 11. Later in life, Gladys worked at Webb Woollies before moving to Ransome and Marles, where she worked for a number of years.
Whilst working at the factory during the Second World War, Ransome and Marles was bombed by the Luftwaffe, resulting in 41 innocent people losing their lives. It was indeed a scary time for all, but Gladys talks openly to staff about her life experiences and how she ran to air-raid shelters for protection.
It’s quite clear Gladys hasn’t lived a boring life, so we’ll continue celebrating it and giving her the highest quality of care, she deserves.
We were all expecting a royal delivery and when we knew it was here, we were thrilled for Gladys. A card was sent from Buckingham Palace addressed to her wishing her a happy 100th birthday signed by the Queen.

“We wanted to make this birthday extra special for Gladys because we know how difficult it has been for everyone not having close contact with their loved ones throughout this last year. We received lots of beautiful bouquets of flowers, presents, cakes and 100th birthday balloons to put together a magical display for Gladys’ big day.
“Despite the current social distancing restrictions, the day was fantastic. We had such a wonderful time and the never-ending smiles from Gladys made us feel warm inside. We knew we’d made her feel special.”
