What a Hooting-Good Afternoon for Residents at Red Roofs

Earlier this month, staff and residents at Red Roofs Residential Care were visited by Lincoln Owl Centre for an afternoon full of fun.

It was a hoot of an experience hosted by the centre and we were elated when the volunteers began telling us interesting facts that we might not know about owls. Did you know that owls can turn their head up to 270 degrees? We were just as shocked as you!

We were joined by barn own Dino, tawny owl Sunbeam and a long-eared owl called Jesse. All of these beautiful birds were extremely placid and very gracious – they loved being held by everyone. The owls were a lot lighter to hold than we expected so the surprises just kept coming.

Constance Shaw, one of our residents expressed how pleased she was with this activity, and she was amazed when she was given the opportunity to hold an owl. It was an experience that many of our residents have never had in their lifetime, and we were thrilled we were able to do this for them.

Trish Smith, general manager at Red Roofs Residential Care Home said:

“When I was approached about this activity by our activity co-ordinator Carrie-Ann, I was extremely excited to get this booked in. We’re always looking at different ways we can provide beneficial mental and physical health activities to all of our residents.

“This particular activity encouraged residents to use a multitude of senses which include touch, hearing, sight and smell. We work closely with our activity co-ordinators to tailor our activities to our resident’s needs. We always ask for feedback from families and residents to see what they enjoy the most and what they may not enjoy as much. There is no place for loneliness at Red Roofs.”
