We all know that Christmas is a time for giving – not just gifts, but memories, moments, and friendship. At Red Homes Care Community, this spirit of generosity comes alive through heartwarming activities that bring joy to residents, staff, and the community alike.
Each Christmas, staff and volunteers give it their all to create special moments, their thoughtful gestures reminding residents that they are cherished, and turning the festive season into a celebration of community and care.
And for many of our residents, too, the real joy of Christmas is in giving back, and many play an active role in spreading festive cheer. From making and sending cards to people in the local community – each one made with love, creativity and a touch of Christmas magic! – to hosting raffles to raise money for others, their contributions are as meaningful as they are sincere.
Staying in touch with the community
A standout event every year is the Christmas tree festival at nearby churches, where residents help to decorate trees with ornaments and well-wishing messages. These always become a centrepiece of the festival, creating talking points and drawing admiration from visitors. This year’s event was extra special, with every single decoration on the Red Homes tree lovingly handmade by our talented residents and staff.
As well as allowing residents to connect with the wider community, these activities bring a sense of pride and purpose. They also remind our residents that they are still a cherished part of the local community, and that Christmas joy often comes from giving and being together
Sarah Taylor, Community Coordinator at Red Homes, said,
“Our residents have poured their hearts into making this tree a true masterpiece with weeks of hard work and creativity, and we couldn’t be prouder.”
Staying in touch with the wider local community is important all year round at every one of our residential communities, but it is especially rewarding at Christmas. Events like carol singing sessions from local choirs bring music and laughter to the homes, while charity donations have encouraged residents to contribute to local causes close to their hearts.
Connections between the generations
A highlight this year was the Red Rose Christmas card competition organised with nearby schools, which invited children to design cards to decorate the homes. The children were then invited to a Festive Tea Party to celebrate with residents.
“Seeing the beautiful artwork brightened everyone’s day,” said Sarah, who organised the competition with the Activity Coordinators, “and it was wonderful to see the smiles on residents’ faces when the children sang carols to them all.”
Staff creating Christmas magic
Of course, the magic of Christmas in the care homes wouldn’t be possible without the unwavering dedication of staff and volunteers, who bring boundless energy and creativity to the season.
They go beyond the call of duty, whether organising carol performances, transforming dining rooms into winter wonderlands or preparing special meals and seasonal favourites. This year Red Roofs cook Mel made a glorious Christmas-pudding themed cake for residents to enjoy, while the chef made Snowman cakes as a treat to put a smile on everyone’s faces.
These acts of kindness embody the true spirit of the season, and we – as well as the residents and their families – are very grateful for their care and attention.
So this Christmas, let’s remember that giving isn’t just about gifts, but about the people we connect with and the difference we make in each other’s lives. Each act of kindness, whether a handmade gift, a simple card, donating to a special cause or volunteering your time, can make the world a little brighter, especially during this season of giving.
