This year marks 76 years since VE Day as the United Kingdom commemorates the end of the Second World War in Europe.
Traditionally, across the Red Homes Group we’d host a number of parties in each garden to celebrate this historic event. Although this year we did celebrate with Covid restrictions in place – this did not stop us from enjoying ourselves.
On Friday 7th May we invited Eleanor Mattley Productions, a female vocalist to sing a variety of 1940s songs to help honour VE Day. We spent the afternoon singing along, drinking a glass or two of Pimms and lemonade and eating delicious baked goods. We also held our very own VE Day quiz on Saturday 8th.
Trish Smith, general manager at Red Roofs Residential Home said:
“This day is quite important to many of our residents because some of them have mixed memories from the Second World War and we wanted to help them celebrate a date that will never be forgotten. Those who are living now, and future generations will always be thankful and respectful to those who lost their lives in the war. It’s important we continue to remember their heroic actions.”
“Last year we were unable to commemorate the 75th anniversary because of the first lockdown restrictions however this year we were able to host a small tea party with an extremely talented singer. It was a fantastic day, and we were all singing and dancing along to 1940s classics.”
As life is beginning to reopen and things are feeling a little more positive, we are still following all professional advice and guidelines and if we feel events cannot take place, family members will be informed as soon as possible.
