On the 1st October we acknowledged International Older People’s Day (IOPD) and in doing so, we thought we’d share some of our observations.
As we reflect on IOPD, here at Red Homes Healthcare, we ensure our residents are regularly involved in activities and events across the group.
Here are a few of our findings:
1. Slowing Down
Whilst the term ‘slowing down’ is widely associated with getting older, we also know that the body is designed to move. Yet when we get older and invariably busier with life, regular movement, and in particular exercise, gets pushed to the bottom of the list of things to do. An active body and mind help to improve wellbeing and life enjoyment and it’s nice to see that older people across the world are embracing this. At Red Homes we actively encourage exercise – whether it’s seated exercise or gentle movement. Our residents’ benefit from it and we know they enjoy it too.

2. Quality of Life
No matter what the age, people have hobbies to enrich their quality of life – and it shouldn’t stop. We know of many older people who still have lifelong hobbies and those who have more time on their hands to commit to their interests. We too have regular activities such as ball exercises, arts and crafts, and flower arranging, which we know our residents look forward to each and every month.

3. Learning new things
Many people, of all ages, love to keep their mind active and engaged by learning new things – and for some, that learning never stops. Whether it’s technology related or some sort of challenge like Captain Tom completed recently, we salute each and every one who wants to learn more. At Red Homes we incorporate learning into lots of activities including baking, gardening, and food tasting.

Diane Watson, manager of Red Rose Care Community, comments:
“We’re all aware of the misconceptions that come with aging and growing older; that’s why we work hard to combat them so our residents feel valued, respected, and free to pursue whatever hobbies, interests and goals they have.”
She continues:
“We have recently increased our social support team, and they regularly carry out butterfly moments and organise one-to-one time with our residents. It’s true what they say, age is just a number, and our fantastic residents prove that every single day. They constantly inspire us with their curiosity and creativity.”
