Green-Fingered Residents Get Busy for National Gardening Week

This month at Red Homes it’s been all about three things. Flowers, seeds and some very green fingers!

Our dear residents have been getting busy in the garden with planting, and have also been turning their attention to indoor pots as well during the lead up to National Gardening Week 2021.

But what is it about gardening that has so many people hooked?

One Red Homes resident said that it gives you something to focus on. Another commented that it’s nice to plant something and nurture it until it begins to grow. And, another added that it’s just lovely to be back in the outdoors again after a year of being indoors.

And we agree – gardening has so many positive effects on mood that it’s something that could (with a little imagination) be enjoyed all year round – both indoors and out.

The RHS recently reported that gardening is a great all-rounder for better physical, mental and social health – and whether you’re a novice grower or a more experienced planter, just being back with nature certainly helps to promote the feel-good factor.

Across all of Red Homes this month, our residents have been planting all manner of things, from lettuce and cress to pretty perennials.

Diane Watson, manager for Red Homes Care Community comments:

“When gardening season comes around each year, there’s definitely a mood shift in the air.

“Many of our residents were keen gardeners before they came to stay with us and with that brings fond memories, and we like to think that we are helping to nurture and rekindle those memories through new plants, seeds and flowers.

“There’s something very special that happens during the lead up to National Gardening Week and beyond, our residents’ bond closer together and our staff also get involved too which helps to foster even greater relationships.

“It’s a lovely time of year and we can’t wait to see the fruits of their labour.”
