A Breath of Fresh Air: How Day Trips Enrich the Lives of our Residents

Red Homes Life Adventures

Life’s little adventures don’t – and shouldn’t – stop just because you’ve moved into a care home.

In the Red Homes community, we understand the importance of creating meaningful experiences for the wonderful people in our home, and this includes regular day trips within the local community. They offer far more than just a change of scenery; these outings play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for our residents, bringing joy, social interaction, and a sense of adventure into their lives.

Social interaction in particular is incredibly beneficial for people as they get older. Research by the National Institute of Aging discovered that taking part in social events and other activities you enjoy can support healthy aging, helping to boost wellbeing, resilience and independence as well as lowering the risk for certain health conditions . This is the case for those with dementia, too – according to the Dementia Adventure charity , even if someone can’t remember the activity itself, the feeling of wellbeing from taking a trip outside stays with them.

We know that our residents enjoy the opportunity to engage with one another and with people in the wider community. As well as being fun, it can reduce feelings of loneliness, and help build friendships within the home. We see a real sense of camaraderie as a result of these shared experiences, whether it’s an organised tour, an afternoon at the park, a trip to a local garden centre, or even a simple pub lunch – as a few of the Red Roofs ladies enjoyed last month.

“The pub outing was a hit, with lots of lively conversation and plenty of laughter,” said Trish, Red Roofs Manager.

“It was a wonderful opportunity for our community to relax and enjoy each other’s company, something that becomes increasingly important as people get older.”

Getting out and about is also beneficial for residents’ physical health. Even gentle activities can help maintain mobility and stamina. For residents with cognitive challenges, such as dementia, day trips also offer sensory stimulation that can be particularly beneficial. As members of two of our care home communities recently discovered during a trip on the Newark Crusader, the sights, sounds, and smells of different environments can help with boosting mental engagement and emotional well-being.

“Our recent cruise along the River Trent gave our residents chance to connect with nature – our group had so much fun spotting wildlife and enjoying the scenic views,” said Joanne Brown, Manager at Red Rose Care Community.

“As well as being really relaxing and a lovely chance to chat, we could tell that it gave everyone a real boost in mood.”

It’s important to us that our residents maintain a sense of autonomy, and leaving the care home for an excursion can give residents a renewed sense of independence.

“It is so heartwarming to see the people who live in our home enjoying themselves and getting so much benefit from these experiences,” said Trish.

“It’s really important to staff that these wonderful people feel part of the local community, and that they get a change of scene and some mental and physical stimulation. Just because people get to a certain age, doesn’t mean they don’t love to try new things and chat to different people. We pride ourselves on giving them that.”

This is why day trips are an essential part of our care strategy. They bring joy, stimulate the senses, encourage social interaction, and promote both mental and physical well-being. Our staff are committed to continuing these enriching experiences, making sure that our residents lead full and vibrant lives on their terms. After all, it’s never too late to explore new places, create memories, and enjoy life’s adventures!
